Learn how to use the What’s Different? materials to provide professional development to educators who teach reading in classes with English language learners

This three-day Training of Trainers (TOT) Institute is based on CAL's widely-used What’s Different About Teaching Reading to English Learners? professional development program. Participants will receive the complete training materials, recommendations on how to deliver What's Different? trainings, hands-on experience using the materials, training tips and much more. The three-day What's Different? Training of Trainers Institute is designed for elementary and middle school ESL and reading specialists who have experience providing professional development to teachers. High school teachers working with newcomers or students acquiring early literacy skills will also benefit. An ideal training team includes an ESL and a reading specialist. The ideal recipients of your training will be teachers who serve students learning English in the general education classroom.

What's Different? incorporates key findings from the National Literacy Panel (2006) on teaching comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonetic awareness and phonics to English learners. Connections will be made with college and career readiness standards (such as CCSS), including reading and writing in the content areas.
