CAL Spanish-English Biliteracy Instruction: Advanced

Dig deep into the Spanish and English language systems and structures to promote students’ metalinguistic awareness ability and the use of their full linguistic repertoires!

This new institute is designed to help participants deepen their knowledge about similarities and differences between Spanish and English and enhance their biliteracy instruction and coaching in programs where content is delivered in Spanish and English, such as dual language and transitional bilingual education programs.

Framed by equity and using CAL’s Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education (Howard, et al., 2018) as the theoretical framework, this interactive institute expands upon the content of CAL’s Spanish-English Biliteracy Instruction: Foundations institute to provide participants with opportunities to put their knowledge into practice by developing activities that promote students’ metalinguistic awareness using strategies such as the Bridge and Preview-View-Review.

The new institute is ideal for participants who have taken CAL’s Spanish-English Biliteracy Instruction Foundations institute and would like to expand their knowledge on the topic, and also for veteran educators who would like to better align their biliteracy instructional or coaching practices with current research-based practices.

The 15-hour institute will provide both live (synchronous) and on-own (asynchronous) online learning and take place over several days. It will include:

  • Workshop/webinar sessions with CAL facilitators to understand and discuss effective practice as well as network with other educators with similar priorities
  • A culminating project in which participants plan a lesson based on what they have learned

  • Identify strategies that support the attainment of the three core goals of dual language education for all students
