CAL Institutes

The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) offers a robust portfolio of professional development institutes designed to bridge research, policy, and practice in service of linguistically and culturally diverse learners. CAL Institutes provide interactive, research-based learning experiences for educators and leaders seeking to deepen their expertise in multilingual learner education. Our offerings are developed and led by CAL’s expert staff across two departments:

  • PK-12 Language and Literacy: Institutes in this area focus on strengthening instructional practice and schoolwide systems of support, with topics including sheltered instruction (SIOP), literacy development, MTSS for multilingual learners, and newcomer supports.
  • Dual Language and Multilingual Education: These institutes center on implementing and sustaining effective dual language programs, serving emergent bilingual students, and promoting biliteracy and multilingualism.

All CAL Institutes Offer practical tools and strategies to enhance instructional effectiveness and improve outcomes for multilingual learners. Institutes are held virtually year-round and in-person in Washington, DC every summer.
